The choice to make the combined North Shore /LIJ program this format was made by a committee composed of faculty and resident members of North Shore (a 3 year program) and Long Island Jewish (a 4 year program). They came together to make their recommendations on how this program could best serve students.Emergency Medicine physicians are a diverse group of individuals but with many elements in common, We are bright, hard working and independent. This program is founded on these principles.

Bright- There is a lot to learn in emergency medicine but students do not start as tabula rasa. Your experiences in college, medical school and life allow you to pick up the skills of emergency medicine quickly. If the residency program gives the educational resources, the mentorship and encouragement, and residents are willing to put in the effort, then there is no doubt that 3 years is enough to learn to be an outstanding practitioner of emergency medicine.

Hard working- Much of what is learned in residency is learned at the bedside. A residency program needs to provide a diverse group of patients with a wide range illness to make residents comfortable with the breadth of EM practice. Simulation and case based learning may augment this as necessary, and rare and complex procedures need to be practiced until they feel common place.

Independent- Not every resident needs the same education. Every adult learner is different. The educational curriculum needs to take this into account and provide a variety of options. Powerpoint lectures in particular do not meet the needs of most emergency medicine resident.

This residency should provide residents with a choice of areas of interests (we call them niches.):

3) Critical Care

4) Toxicology

5) EMS and pre-hospital medicine

6) Sports medicine

7) Research

8) Emergency and Healthcare Administration

9) Education and Academics

10 Simulation

Residents choose may choose a niche and get special training by qualified faculty in these areas during residency. If a resident wants to stay an extra year to pursue these interests we will make sure that there is a spot for them. Some of these naturally flow into fellowship and others are more experiential for residents to set up a niche in their career.
